Many rural hospitals cannot admit end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients because they don’t have a nephrologist on staff or dialysis machines ready for use. As a result, when rural patients need care, they are forced to drive miles away to urban hospitals – a stressful experience for patients, and a big loss for the rural hospitals that would love to care for them.
